Home Theater Design

Here are some home theater design options to consider for small, medium, and large living rooms. The type of components you select and how you arrange them will depend on room size. Make sure you check out our viewing distance chart to see what screen size is best for your room.

Home Theater Design for Small Rooms
Home theater design for small living rooms will use components that conserve space. The smaller the room the less power your audio system will need. You will also need to be sure that you select the appropriate size TV for your viewing distance.
In a small room consider purchasing an all-in-one home theater system. A home theater in-a-box system should be able to provide enough power for a full audio experience in a small room. Make sure that if you are using satellite speakers your system has a subwoofer to provide bass.
If conserving space is a concern, consider purchasing a flat-panel TV. Either an LCD or plasma TV can be mounted on the wall to save valuable floor space.

Home Theater Design for Medium Rooms
Designing your home theater in a medium sized room gives you a few more options. In a medium sized room you will need more power from your audio system. A medium size room will give you the viewing distance you need for larger screens.
Select separate home theater components based on your needs. Select either book shelf or tower speakers and a powerful subwoofer. In a medium sized home theater you can select a larger TV and make an entertainment cabinet part of your home theater design.

Home Theater Design for Large Rooms
A home theater in a large living room will allow you to have a large TV, multiple components and a large entertainment center.
Select a powerful home audio system to make sure sound is being sent throughout the room. Space is not an issue so choose larger tower speakers and a 10"-15" inch subwoofer for deep bass.
In a large room any size TV screen can be viewed. Another viewing option is mounting an overhead projector and a movie screen in your living room. A movie screen can easily be mounted to a home theater's entertainment cabinet. This may be the best option if you will mostly be using your home theater to watch movies.
